Wedding Cake Trends 2018: The Collaboration

Another really cool element we are seeing a lot in weddings is the bridal wreath! From bouquets, backdrops and even wedding altars. Brides are loving this circular decor, usually made with greenery and flowers.

To incorporate this theme into your wedding you can use a circular wreath for favors, large wreaths for backdrops or even a creative swing for taking photos. Check out some floral wreath inspiration on pinterest!

About this cake:

For the floral hoop theme I took inspiration from hoops that I have seen recently used for bridesmaids instead of traditional bouquets and also for wedding décor as hanging details. I choose to use more  vibrant colours in my flower selection. I arranged them around the base of the hoop and displayed it resting on a dark lustred cake, which I see being another trend in 2018.

Emma is the founder of The Grimm Obsession, a group of international award winning sugar artists who took Snow White to the dark side in a showpiece exhibit at Cake International 2017. Emma has been published in numerous magazines and blogs including Cake Masters Magazine, American Cake Decorating Magazine and Mr Bakers Blog.

Do you want to learn how to make your own floral wreath? Emma shows us how she makes hers!

Floral Wreath Tutorial

  • 8 x 22 gauge white wire
  • White floral tape
  • Rolkem Super Gold lustre dust
  • High percentage alcohol
  • Paint brush
  • Edible glaze spray
  • Flowers, foliage and berries
Arrange the wires into 4 pairs. Tape the full length of each pair so that they are joined end on to make 4 double length wires.

Separate the long wires into two pairs. Then wind each pair together down the full length to give you 2 twisted wires.
Wind the 2 twisted wires together to make one thick twisted wire.
Bend the twisted wire to form a hoop. Reserve approximately 2 inches at each end with which to create the hoop insert. Bend the ends to point away from the hoop and twist together to form the insert.
Create an edible gold paint using the gold lustre dust and high percentage alcohol. Paint the hoop all over with the gold. Once dry spray with edible glaze to seal the gold lustre to prevent transfer onto your cake or flowers/foliage when adding.
Once hoop is dry begin taping on the foliage & berries from the outer edges of where you want your hoop arrangement to be. Work towards the insert, leaving space for a central arrangement.
Create the centre arrangement with you’re main flowers and leaves.
Once the hoop is positioned on your cake, insert the central arrangement so that is conceals the hoop support, so the hoop appears to be resting on the edge of the cake unaided.
